Are There Different Types Of Hypnosis?

I belong to a writing club. People enjoy writing short stories, poems, even novels and scripts. It's an extremely happy atmosphere with some nicely nice, pleasant people.

One particular lady, knowing of my interest in hypnosis, set this extraordinary type of video up for me. It's only a small one, but it's the picture of a man's face with only one eye. Hanging down on either side of his face, are two steel balls which swing. As you're looking at the picture, the right ball hits the right side of his face and sends the eyeball across to the other side. Then the left ball hits the left side of his face, and the eyeball moves back to the right, and so on.

Look at this for any length of time, and you're well into a trance.

Are there different types of hypnosis? No. Hypnosis is hypnosis. However, there are many different ways of eliciting the trance. I've often wonderred just how many there are. If you had the time and the inclining, you could go through the whole Web and count them all. Everyone sees to have his or her own ideas.

We've been through old Svengali and his swinging watch, although I personally prefer a pendulum or a metronome. The latter is particularly useful, because you can speed it up or down.

One of the ways our ancestors induced trance was by the sound of a drum. Not necessarily a single beat, but it had to be repetitious. I do not recommend you try your recording of Gene Krupa for this one!

Drums have been used by peoples all over the World, of course. The American Indians, African tribes, the tribes in the Amazon forest. You name it. That, and of course gazing into a large fire helps, as well.

Another method I use for relaxation, is to let my imagination wander to some form of magic carpet. Then I think about a place of particular scenic beauty, and imagine myself flying over this place. This works very well for me, but to each his own.

But for what are you aiming? Purely relaxation? You may like to try my method, but if you're determined to be a brilliant concert pianist, then the method of focusing on a stage and gradually assuming the persona of the maestro is an excellent way of instilling into your unconscious mind your desire.

But you must unfortunately want to do it. Nothing will be achieved if you wake up one morning and think; I'd like to be a dance band trumpeter. Perhaps for a few evenings, you dutifully sit in your chair and 'focus', but it will not last.

Do you have emotional control? If not, then practice it. It's so necessary and so well worth the while to look before you leap. But we all 'let go' without thinking, do not we? The knack is to look past the immediate and into the future.

“If I do this, what effect is it going to have down the line?”

Just supposing you're watching TV one night and something coming up that really lights a fire under you. Right at that moment, your emotions are out of control, so sit back for a couple of minutes and ask yourself why. What's made you so mad, angry, sorrowful, happy, sad? By doing this, you're keeping your emotions under control.

Another plan is if you come home from work after a difficult day, and you feel definitely out of sorts. Relax in your favorite chair and let your imagination take you somewhere nice. Amazing how much better you'll feel.

How Powerful Is The Unconscious Mind?

Did you know there are two of you? Two of me? Two of old Fred Bloggs down the street? Oh yes, there are, but it's all in the mind. Or more accurately, our conscious and unconscious minds.

The person who always likes to be in control of everything, tends to use the wrong part of his or her mind. People like this often find it difficult to sleep, being happy at parties or organizing office meetings. In fact, they can be very difficult at the latter. They not only want to control themselves, but everyone else around them.

Basically, they find themselves unable to relax. Even sexually they can have a difficult time, because to them, they're losing control. They must control their partner and not allow their other half to give them the pleasure that could so easily be enjoyed by them.

Now there are lots of things that happen in your body over which we have no control whatever. More accurately, sometimes, we simply never think about them. Our digestive system, flow of blood and all the workings of our bodies about which we never think – unless something goes wrong.

But all this is governed by our unconscious mind. You'd probably drive yourself mad were you to try to govern these consciously.

So how powerful is the unconscious mind? What are its limits? You are able to lower or raise your blood pressure. Not through your conscious mind, of course, but by gently appealing to your unconscious. Hypnosis can lower or raise blood pressure, as we've just seen.

You may feel your feet becoming warmer or colder, and you'll find yourself relaxing more and more.

Pain is another thing that can be turned off by your unconscious mind through hypnosis. Do not forget it is the unconscious mind to which you're appealing now. Let's consider one of the most common forms of pain, the headache.

You can lie down and allow your conscious mind to wander where it will. It's the unconscious part of your mind that's in the spotlight now.

Think of your head as a ball of fire, if you like, or should it be a dull ache, then as a heavy weight. Let's say a heavy weight. You lie down, and there it is, throbbing away, your conscious mind saying;

“I wish you'd get rid of this wretched headache.”

But here your unconscious creeps in. You imagine the weight as a lump of cast iron, but slowly it changes to aluminum. The pain will tend to decrease. From aluminum, it becomes a piece of wood, then some feathers.

Like most things that you try for the first time, you may well have trouble ridding yourself of the headache. Do not give up. The more you practice, the easier and more fluent it becomes. I fear it's human nature all too often to simply say;

“Oh, that did not work. What's the point? That man was talking rubbish.”

As a rather silly analogy, suppose you started eating for the first time and something stuck in your throat.

“What's the point,” you'd say.

But you'd end up in terrible trouble if you no longer ate!

What Is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)?

About a week ago, I attended the most fascinating training I've ever experienced in my lifetime. It involved sitting in folding chairs in a large, white tent known as the Garden Pavillion at an upscale hotel in Irvine, CA for 11 hours a day for 4 days in a row. Not once during the 44 hours of training did I get bored, feel tired, or wish I was at near Disneyland instead of being glued to my chair. The training was an Accelerated NLP Practitioner training. I learned many of the techniques and applications of NLP to become a certified practitioner, but more importantly, I learned about myself, how my thought processes and language patterns influence my perceptions of the world, and how I can make changes to those processes and patterns to produce exceptional outcomes to my emotional well-being.

What is NLP?

“It's an attitude that has to do with curiosity, with wanting to know about things, wanting to be able to influence things, and wanting to be able to influence them in a way that's worthwhile” – Richard Bandler

Neuro-linguistic programming is a model of thinking and learning developed by Dr. John Grinder and Richard Bandler. At the time of their collaboration, Grinder was an Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Bandler was a student of psychology at the same institution. Together, they studied three of the most influential therapists of all time: Fritz Perls, originator of Gestalt therapy, Virginia Satir, an extraordinary family therapists who used the power of language to resolve conflicts and change lives, and Milton Erickson, a world-famous hypnotherapist. The result of Bandler and Ginder's work was a model for using the power of language to change and influence patterns of thinking at the unconscious level to produce desired changes in behavior.

Neuro-linguistic programming is a cumbersome phrase that covers three simple ideas:

1. Neuro – acknowledges the fundamental idea that all behavior stems from our neurological processes of sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, and feeling. We experience the world through our five senses.

2. Linguistic – how we use language to order our thoughts and behavior and to communicate with others.

3. Programming – reiter to ways we can choose to organize our ideas and actions to produce results.

NLP is a practical skill that creates the results we really want in the world while creating value for others in the process.

To use NLP you do not have to change any of your beliefs or values. Simply be curious and prepared to experiment. All generalizations about people are lies to somebody, because everyone is unique. Our beliefs act as filters, causing us to act in certain ways and to notice some things but not others. NLP offers one way of thinking about ourselves and the world; it is itself a filter. By changing you filters, you can change your world.

Typically, your hypnotherapist will explain the procedure of hypnosis and assess what you need to accomplish. The hypnotherapist usually brings you into hypnosis by speaking in a gentle, subtle and calming tone while describing pictures to build a sense of security, relaxation and well-being.

When you're in an extreme trance condition, the hypnotherapist will recommend ways in achieving specific goals like minimizing pain or eliminating yearning for cigarettes. Change My Habits? I Can’t Even Change My Mind!

You may have heard about holistic health and wellbeing. But what does that mean? Well, it is built on the fact that the mind and body really are connected. Anything that happens in one has a direct impact on the other. If something happens which scares you / frigtens you / annoys you / makes you happy – that feeling will manifest itself physically.

Remember back to your first date. How did you feel? Butterflies in your stomach, pulse racing? Sound familiar. A physical response to anticipation of an event.

Or maybe you have done something wrong and dread being found out – again, think of the physical manifestations.

That's why it's so annoying to me, when people dismissively say “It's all in your mind.” Have you noticed that they always say it in such as way as to imply –
1) It's not real, you're just imagining it; Egypt
2) You're making it up; Egypt
3) You're crazy

Thankfully, you now know that none of these is true.

But if the mind plays such an important part in how the body feels, is there anything we can do about it?

Thankfully the answer to that is yes.

The human brain is far more powerful than any computer. The problem with it is that it did not come with an instruction manual, so we may not be using it to our best advantage.

The human brain is complex and has two quite separate operations – the conscious and the subconscious mind.

The conscious mind helps you get up out of bed in the morning and then drives everything you do – reading a book, talking to your friends, making dinner and so on. Your intellect is greatly driven by your conscious mind. It's pretty smart and can reason things out.

Your subconscious mind is a bit different. It works 24/7 at keeping you going. It's sole purpose is to serve and protect you. It keeps your heart beating and it regulates all the processes in your body. If you have ever driven home and realized that you have no memory of the drive home, it's because your subconscious mind has taken over. That's nothing to worry about by the way, and much more common that you may realize. The subconscious is also where all your memories are stored. But your subconscious mind is not as smart as your conscious mind. It believes everything it is told and will work to make sure that you get what it thinks you want. It will not make any value judgments and it can not process negatives.

The subconscious mind plays a huge role in creating our conscious behavior. It is the single largest factor in determining how we react in any given situation. Neuroscience has shown that 95% -99% of our behavior is made up of stored responses. That's a huge influence and remember, the subconscious mind does not make any value judgments, it responds based on its own store of beliefs and values.

Now sometimes that can be handy. When you see a chair, you do not want to have to wonder about what to do with it, but it can be a problem when your values ​​and beliefs are not taking you where you want to go.

Let's say that all your life people have told you that you are fat. Your subconscious mind will have stored all of these memories and formed them into a belief. And it will now do everything it can to make sure you stay that way. So, no matter how much you want to lose weight consciously your subconscious mind will try to keep bringing you back to what it thinks you want – to be fat.

That's why thinking positive thoughts is not enough – you need to actually re-program your subconscious mind

The only way to do that and introduce new values ​​and beliefs is to bypass the critical conscious mind. One of the best ways to do that is by using hypnosis, or the language pattern of NLP. Both of these allow ideas to enter straight into the subconscious mind. During hypnosis, you are put into a state of deep relaxation which allow your subconscious mind to become more receptive to change.

Do not be scared of hypnosis, we all go into light levels of hypnosis every day. And contrary to popular belief everyone can be hypnotised. All you need is the motivation to be hypnotized and the willingness to respond to suggestion.

You can either go work with a professional hypnotist, or use pre-recorded hypnosis sessions. The advantage of using the latter is that they will probably be cheaper and you can play them over and over again. It takes around two weeks for new habits to become formed, so listening every day for two weeks can help deliver real change.

The History of Modern Hypnosis

Hypnosis, Hypnotism, Mesmerism, Neuro Linguistic Programming. However one may wish to label it there remains, even in these days of psychological enlightenment, an undying mystery to the art and science behind the operation and use of natural trance states.

The phenomenon commonly known as hypnosis has existed in one form or another for thousands of years (sometimes even for hundreds of thousands of years). World history is full of stories of people using hypnotic trance states particularly in acts of worship. Significant evidence exists of hypnotic trances being used among a plurality of ancient peoples from the Hebrews to the ancient Irish druids who used hypnotic trance to heighten their spiritual awareness and to reach new states of mind and of course the ancient Egyptians who used hypnotic trance for medicinal purposes as long ago as 1500BC as evidenced in the Ebers Papyrus.

Yet despite the lengthy history and the familiarity of most of the population with the concept of hypnosis, it remains one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented psychological phenomena in the world. Shrouded in mystery, often accused of being dangerous or sacrilegious practice, a mere party trick or a worthless pseudo-science; Hypnosis is in dire need of a public relations makeover.

In order to rescue hypnosis from the the mist of mystery it is important to understand something about the development of modern hypnosis. As such I aim to provide a very brief history of hypnosis.

Modern hypnotism has its roots in the works of the so called magnetists, who worked on the promise that by utilizing the power of magnets and magnetic forces, known as magnetism, they could cure an almost infinite range of ailments. One student of magnetism was the German Dr Franz Anton Mesmer (1734 to 1815) whose work on 'animal magnetism' would significantly affect the development of hypnosis. In fact so significant is the impact of Dr Mesmer that is name has given rise to the words mesmerism and mesmerized, which indicates an individual feeling a strong or spellbinding fascination of something or someone.

Dr Mesmer became famous for his 'irregular' yet highly effective treatment of individuals using trances which he would indicate and combine with making passes over the subject with his hands. Very little was understood about the trances and the healing process was left simply to the trance itself with little input form Mesmer after induction. Mesmer's techniques were poisoned all over Paris for their dramatic effects of remedying mental and physical illnesses without recourse to the savage surgical procedures which caused at the time. In fact so popular was Dr Mesmer's practice that he was required initially to begin mass inductions of up to 20 people at a time in order to keep up with demand for his services.

However, despite the undeniable success of Dr Mesmer's practice many doubts were raised about his works and the scientific community in Paris at the time viewed Dr Mesmer's works with a deep skepticism. A commission established by King Louis XVI in 1784, which was observed a number of respected intellectuals of the day including Benjamin Franklin, discredited many of Dr Mesmer's theories, which identified the phenomena as the work of magnetic fluids, yet could not challenge the healing benefits of the phenomena.

Dr Mesmer's reputation never fully recovered from the reports reports, however his work on animal magnetism no matter how theoretically flawed continued to fascinate or 'mesmerise' many scientists.

Indeed it was one of Mesmer's students, Marquis Chastenet de Puységur, who continued the investigation of the effects of magnetism. It was de Puységur who coined the term somnambulism, which is the sleep like yet active state found in hypnosis and in sleepwalkers! De Puységur's proved a lot less controversial than that of his teacher, though he did believe that in a somnambulistic trance an individual could hold powers of thought transference and clairvoyance!

Then in the city of Calcutta in British India in the 1840's a Scottish surgeon named Dr James Esdaile began a remarkable experiment in the practical humanitarian application of hypnosis or mesmerism in the course of conducting surgery on his patients. Dr Edaile would use a process he termed, mesmeric anaesthesia, to reduce the physical pain of his patients and thus carry out his procedures with his patients in a calm and controlled state. It must have been remembered that at this time surgery was still carried out with little or no attempt at pain reduction, and indeed many medical professionals believed that pain was a necessary part of healing and so this development of pain free surgery was of itself controversial.

Dr Esdaile became very well known in Calcutta and was like Dr Mesmer in Paris almost a century before in great demand for his services. However, despite his success in using hypnotic or mesmeric anaesthesia, Dr Esdaile's methods were overtaken by the use of chemical anaesthesia which came into use at around the same time. Essentially it was easier to prescribe a drug than to learn to hypnotize a patient and so the medical use of hypnosis was set back.

It was another Scottish surgeon, Dr James Braid, who coined the term hypnotism! The term is derived from the Greek for sleep and is largely responsible for many people to this day confusing hypnosis with sleep. In fact Dr Braid himself was extremely unhappy with the term, and the incorrect connection to sleep, and so he attempted to change it to the more accurate if less catchy monoideaism, meaning one single idea (ism).

Dr Braid contributed greatly to the professionalism of the study of hypnosis printing during the first ever book of hypnotism, Neuropnology in 1843. His work stuck out much of the understanding of the mesmerists and magnetists that went before him and he became the first true hypnotist; understanding that hypnosis was a psychological phenomena and not the result of invisible forces.

Then in France in 1884 Dr. Ambroise-August Liebeault found that through using hypnotic trance on his patients he could treat psychological problems using simple suggestion. This discovery leads us almost to the modern understanding of hypnosis. Before this hypnosis was heavily used by surgeons but now it was being utilized in the treatment of psychological issues. Jean-Martin Charcot then began to endorse the use of hypnotism for the treatment of hysteria.

Dr Charcot began to give public exhibitions of the effect of hypnotic techniques on psychiatric patients suffering from what was then termed hysteria. He was able to undertake experiments in disassociation from traumatic events and the unaware of memories! Techniques which are well known to hypnotherapists today.

Amongst the many students who attended Dr Charcot's demonstrations was the man who would later go on to found psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. So impressed with hypnosis and hypnotic techniques was Dr Freud that he dedicated much of his early career to experimenting with the application of hypnosis in the treatment of psychological conditions. Even after abandoning hypnosis to the discipline of psychoanalysis Dr Freud was still in his later years of the opinion that psychoanalysis could be advanced through the application of hypnotic suggestion.

However it fell to two American hypnotists, Dave Elman and Milton Erickson to lay the foundations of truly modern hypnosis.

Dave Elman has given his name to the 'Elman induction' which is one of the most reliable 'rapid inductions' ever invented. His induction revolutionized the process of hypnosis for therapy as it allowed a hypnotist to induce trance to a significant depth within a few minutes as opposed to the lengthy and unreliable inductions which went before! His book 'hypnotherapy' is also required reading for any student of hypnosis!

Milton Erickson was the founding president of the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis and his intensive practice of clinical hypnosis has provided numerous insights into the language of the subconscious mind and inspired the inventors of Neuro-Linguistic Programming. His approaches to hypnotism are still much studied a copied by hypnotists the world over and his ideas are still being developed to this day.

The advances of hypnosis over the last two centuries are unmistakable and yet hypnosis is still a mystery to most of the population often treated with utter suspicion or disbelief. This is unfortunately a problem which hypnotists themselves need to combat if they are going to ensure that the art and science of hypnosis are available to future generations.

Ideal Weight Hypnosis Combined With Gastric Band Surgery

For many obese people a now popular method of weight reduction is gastric band surgery. Like most forms of intervention it works for some but not for others. And there are some very obvious reasons why. For successful weight loss with gastric band surgery there are some key things to do prior to and after surgery, especially ideal weight hypnosis.

A person struggles with weight loss for years. They have tried all the diets, all the exercise programs, and all they have for their troubles are frustration, pain and sadness.

Wow it's a wonder anyone succeeds! Studies show that patients who did not adjust their eating were 2.5 times less likely to succeed. But adjusting eating is the problem in the first place!

There is a way to make your gastric band surgery work much better. Ideal weight hypnosis can address all the issues you may struggle with.

Whether it is stress eating, being able to sustain a low calorie diet, overcoming fear about surgery, or even the concern of having a surgical device fitted. The hypnosis can be applied to having drink fluids, the loss of the ability to eat normally, having to quit favorite foods.

The list can go on and on. There are as many potential stresses as there are people having these surgeries. The point is that you do not have to fear your surgery or the band or the diet, but you do need to use hypnosis to manage your fear.

Some of these issues will be long term such as the struggle with being able to maintain a healthy diet. This aspect needs carefully work because you have so many connections to past events and feelings.

The fear around the surgery can be easily handled with hypnosis and a few relaxation strategies. By decreasing the stress hormones in your system you go to the surgery with a much better chance of a successful exit.

The Standard Technique Used to Hypnotise Someone

A proper way to hypnotize someone is to relax them. The help of aroma therapy could help. The idea is to allow for a reminiscent phase to begin, while the presence of danger is not relevant, at the time. 'Just let your feet relax, and your legs relax. Feel your waste relaxing, and your hips relaxing. Feel your chest relaxing, and your arms relaxing. Feel your entire body relaxing, all over. '

Once that segment of how to hypnotize someone is complete, overtake their tone by producing a self image for them. Continue to flatter them by announcing that they are confident about life, their motivations are in the right place, and that they are doing the right thing all of the time. Consciously concluding the hypnotic session by saying, “I'm going to count from one to five, and at the count of five you will be feeling wide awake, fully alert, and completely refreshed.”

Finally, be sure to include the participant during the consciousness ceremony; abiding by the rule of allowing them to open their eyes again, in order to focus. Inform the participant of what was done and the results from the hypnotic actions. By being a sympathetic and honest examiner, the next moment of having a hypnotic session will come more easily.
